Byzantine: Architecture

The Byzantine Empire saw an EVEN GREATER advancement in architectural sophistication. At this time, the dome was getting more face time and building floor plans were shifting to polygonal and square shapes. Just like in earlier Roman period, brickwork and concrete was very important in the Byzantine Empire. Huge churches and tombs were constructed with the popular dome structure and the brickwork was laid in patterns and banding. The insides of Byzantine marvels were decorated heavily with colorful frescoes and mosaics. In my opinion, this is when buildings started looking more and more like they do today, which is pretty crazy!
Monastery at Daphne Greece. Check out that sweet DOME and awesome arches! How Byzantium of them!

The AMAZING Hagia Sophia. That dome is SO high! I'd have to jump on my broomstick to get all the way up there! Notice the super-ornate painting and decoration.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. This is my cat Salem's favorite Byzantine structure.
