Romanesque... Roman-ish?: Architecture

The Maria Laach Abbey

Buildings from the Romanesque period are known for their strength. Stone materials were heavily utilized. Walls were very thick and windows were small. No more relying on those awesome columns anymore, you guys! Arches supported roofs and were also built just for decoration. Romanesque architecture also featured many different types of vaults, as well as buttresses, arcades, and piers. Reminds me of Gothic style, but we're not quite there yet, time travelers!

The nave of Gloucester Cathedral. The nave is the major part of the church. Feast your eyes on those beautiful RIBBED VAULTS!
Barrel vault alert!!!
